Becoming the Change You Want to Be – An Interview with Junyi Alumna, Hanako |
“So far, I believe I’ve lived out two of the motivational quotes that Chair Stanley Yen often encourages us with, ‘Be the change you want to see’ and ‘Be someone who is ready.’” Hanako Purapuran (Wen-Chun Chen), a radiant graduate of the pioneering class of Junyi School of Innovation (2018), has had a busy summer. In June, she participated in the Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture in Hawaiʻi, held an art exhibition in Philadelphia in July, returned to Taiwan for an artist residency in Taitung in August, and by the end of the month, she was off to Japan for a three-month course. TC Masterclass – To touch the audience, you must first immerse yourself
|
2024 Taiwan Connection (TC) Music Festival – TC20, “The Great Revisited,” successfully completed nine ticketed performances and five lectures, all of which were spectacular. The ticket sales exceeded expectations, and fans were left wanting more. This year, TC Director Nai-Yuan Hu invited principal musicians from leading orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. Once the announcement was made, instrument vendors, musicians, and students eagerly inquired about masterclass registration. To expand the event, TC hosted a total of seven
masterclasses this year, five of which were partnered with instrument vendors including sessions on wind instruments, piano, and chamber music, benefiting more students.
The chamber music masterclasses were conducted individually by South Korean violinist Dong-Suk Kang, French cellist Henri Demarquette, pianist Ya-Fei Chuang, and Nai-Yuan Hu. The musicians engaged closely with the students through their approachable and humorous personalities. Chuang advised students not to focus solely on perfecting difficult passages when practicing new pieces but to first aim for the general character and tempo of the piece. While playing music that the audience can enjoy is important, it’s even more crucial for the performer to immerse themselves first.

Japanese Cuisine Course – the Start of the New Semester
|
In 2011, The Alliance Cultural Foundation (ACF) launched a guidance program for vocational schools, with National Taitung Commercial and Aquatic Senior High School being the first partner school. In the 2023 school year, the “Japanese Cuisine Course“ continues. On September 19th, the first class of the second year took place, where ACF Board member Patrick Su shared his experience transitioning from hotel General Manager to professor and then engaging in social work, under the theme “Everyone Can Be a Champion,” with 26
teachers and students from the culinary and tourism departments.
The first Japanese cuisine class on September 26th was co-taught by Shin Yeh Restaurant Group’s sous chef, Chef Shih-Lin Yeh, and Chef Yu-Chuan Wang. The lesson started with the basics, such as “how to properly tie a chef’s apron” and “how to sharpen a kitchen knife.” The correct way to tie the apron not only prevents it from falling but also allows for a quick release in an emergency, effectively avoiding water or oil splashes. The chefs explained that every day after work, they sharpen their knives, a professional discipline that not only enhances efficiency but also trains patience and focus. These basic
skills form the first lesson in becoming a professional chef.

Teacher Katu’s “ItuMamahav tu Pasnanavaan” Awarded the 48th Golden Tripod Award
|
Teacher Katu (Jun-Hsiung Ke), who has long been leading students in Outdoor Education exploration program, along with partners from the Laipunuk Cultural Heritage Studio, has compiled their experiences and wisdom from forest education into the book “ItuMamahav tu Pasnanavaan,” which has won the prestigious 48th Golden Tripod Awards for Publications.
At the award ceremony, Teacher Katu began with his indigenous language and dedicated the award to those who continue to return to their original tribal areas, “Thanks to the efforts of pioneers and successors everywhere, we can continue to tell our existence, our stories, and our diverse imaginations of this land and its mountains and forests.”
“ItuMamahav tu Pasnanavaan” is also a teaching material for Junyi Outdoor Education’s forest culture curriculum. Children can learn about local cultural and natural resources before their journey, seeing the interactions between Taiwan and world history from the perspective of the Bunun people.

Outrigger Canoe Experience – Bravely Breaking Through Boundaries
|
September 21-22, Junyi held its first holiday course of the semester, titled “Exploring the Outrigger Canoe,” for seventh and tenth graders, inviting coaches from the Taiwan Outrigger Canoe Club to co-teach.
In the morning, students learned paddling techniques and self-rescue skills at the lakeside of Flowing Lake. In the afternoon, they participated in practical exercises, starting with basic water awareness and learning the correct way to wear life jackets. The teachers also introduced the value of Aloha Ohana (family) into the classroom. The six-person canoe that the students practiced required everyone to take on specific roles, work together, and support each other. Students who were unable to get into the water cheered enthusiastically from the shore and helped pack up the equipment at the end.
Coincidentally, on the morning of September 21st, the school held a parent-teacher meeting, and in the afternoon, the seventh-grade parents accompanied their children to participate in the course. They were pleasantly surprised to discover that their children, who were initially afraid of water, had become braver after multiple water experiences and knowledge acquisition provided by the school. They look forward to their children taking on more self-challenges in the future.
